Generative AI is the branch of artificial intelligence that produces new content, such as text, images or code, from patterns learned in data. Traditional AI, also called recognition AI, identifies, classifies and predicts on existing data without creating anything new. The two do not replace each other: traditional AI fits problems that need verifiable results, such as security surveillance, while generative AI fits drafting and summarization work.

What is traditional AI?

The concept. Traditional AI is trained to perform one defined task: recognize an object, classify a case, forecast a value. The output is a label or a number, together with a confidence level.

Characteristics.

  • Each model serves one specific task, trained on labeled data.
  • Results are measured as accuracy, can be audited, and support acceptance thresholds.
  • It runs stably at scale with lower compute cost than large language models, which suits continuous processing.

Examples. Demand forecasting and credit risk scoring; in video surveillance: face recognition, license plate reading, smoke and fire detection, and people counting.

What is generative AI?

The concept. Generative AI learns structure from very large volumes of data, then produces new content on request, usually prompted in natural language.

Characteristics.

  • One model covers many tasks: writing, summarizing, translating, coding, creating images.
  • The output is new content and can differ between runs.
  • It can produce statements that sound plausible but are wrong, so a human should review anything used for an important decision.

Examples. Chat assistants, drafting emails and reports, summarizing documents, creating illustrations, and coding support.

Traditional AI vs generative AI

Criterion Traditional AI Generative AI
Goal Recognize, classify, predict Create new content
Output Labels, metrics, confidence levels Text, images, code
Scope One task per model Many tasks on one model
Verification Measured accuracy, thresholds possible Requires human review
Main risk Wrong results when live data differs from training data Confident but incorrect content
Best for Surveillance, access control, automated alerts Drafting, summarization, question answering

Which one should a business choose?

  • Detecting events and alerting in real time (intrusion, smoke and fire, missing protective equipment, unknown vehicles): choose traditional AI. The results need to be verifiable and the system runs around the clock.
  • Drafting, summarizing, answering questions over documents: choose generative AI, with a human approval step.
  • Both: use traditional AI to turn images into structured data, then let other tools (reports, queries, summaries) work on that data.

Where does Vaidio AI Vision fit?

Vaidio AI Vision is an image analytics platform for cameras: it recognizes people, vehicles, faces, protective equipment, smoke and fire, and other events on video in real time, which places it in the recognition AI group. The platform runs on the camera system a business already has, and data stays on site.

Vaidio AI Vision also has the Natural Language Enhancement (NLE) engine, which brings natural language descriptions into search and alerts. NLE matches video imagery against written descriptions; it does not generate new images or text, so it is not generative AI. NLE enables:

  • Free-text search across the people, vehicles, animals, objects, dangerous items and scene categories, for example “a person wearing a cap” or “a person carrying a bottle”, combined with filters by camera, time and object type.
  • Description-based alerts when used together with the intrusion detection feature (both the NLE license and the intrusion detection license are required), for example alerting when a person carrying a specific object enters a monitored zone.

A few usage notes: short descriptions naming the object and a couple of key details work better than long ones; each description should include one action by the object, such as “a person carrying a bottle”; NLE is a separate engine and requires its own license.

NLE still belongs to recognition AI: the recognition side turns video into structured data, and the language side lets users query that data with descriptive sentences instead of selecting filters one by one. The platform’s core task remains recognizing events on video.
